3rd Annual Meet Your Law Students Mixer

About: This special event is for law students and CCBA members to celebrate law students who are interested in meeting members of the bench and bar including managing and hiring partners from law firms in Clark County, Nevada. This is a private indoor/outdoor event featuring complimentary food and drink tickets while supplies last. There is no fee to attend this event; however, space will be limited to law students and CCBA members those who RSVP to the CCBA. Sponsorships are available to select businesses.

  • Why: Group activity to benefit homeless teenagers served by the Project 150. Project 150 is a local non-profit with a mission to offer free support and services to homeless, displaced, and disadvantaged high school students in the Southern Nevada area so they can remain in school and graduate.
  • When: Saturday, Apr. 6, 2024, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

24th Annual Clark County Bar Association Moot Competition

Volunteers needed!

  • Saturday Apr. 13, 2024: 9:00 a.m. – 11:15 a.m.
  • UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law

About: The CCBA Moot Court Competition provides 1L students at Boyd their first opportunity to practice their oral argument skills through an appellate case. This year, 1L students are currently drafting an appellate brief for their Lawyering Process II class that will serve as a foundation for their oral arguments. This is a semester-long assignment that requires dedication and great preparation.Students have been assigned the role of Plaintiff or Defendant for purposes of their brief, however, for the competition, they will prepare arguments for both sides. Preliminary rounds will be on-brief and advanced rounds could be off-brief. Students will have the opportunity to speak for 12 minutes, which will include presenting arguments and answering the questions of judges. It is the role of judges to observe students assigned to them, question their arguments during presentation, and score them according to their performance. After both sides have presented, judges will have a few minutes to score the students and provide them with constructive feedback.

Note: Volunteers should be Nevada attorneys, judges or mediators. Judging the competition qualifies as pro bono service!

Law Day Activities

Attorney Volunteers Needed on May 1, 2024

The CCBA is recruiting Nevada lawyers to volunteer at the legal resource fair at Nellis AFB on May 1, 2024. Attorney volunteers will help at information tables. Participating volunteers will need to pass a security clearance.

Deadline is April 1, 2024, to sign up to be a volunteer for Law Day event on May 1, 2024. CCBA members and Nevada lawyers who are interested in participating should contact Stephanie at the CCBA office at 702-387-6011 for more information.

“Probate for the Non-Probate Attorney: Navigating Probate in PI & Wrongful Death Cases”

  • Speaker: James A. Fontano, Probate Commissioner, 8th Judicial District Court
    About: You are good at what you do—whether it’s a simple car accident or a complex wrongful death suit, you have spent a lot of time perfecting your craft, and you deliver excellent legal service to your clients. But problems always seem to arise when you have a matter that requires approval of a settlement or an order to distribute the proceeds from the probate court. In this CLE, Probate Commissioner James Fontano will provide tools and tricks to getting your civil case through probate quickly and efficiently, and without those annoying emails telling you that your matter has to be continued or taken off calendar. You will learn:
    • How probate works, how long it takes, and what procedural steps are involved
    • What a special administration is, and what it allows you to do
    • Why probate approval is necessary, and how to get your settlement approved
    • How to allocate proceeds between the estate and the decedent’s heirs
    • How to convert the special administration to a set aside, summary administration, or general administration, and how to close the estate.

Senior Law Program’s Will-A-Thon

Volunteers are needed to help the CCBA’s Community Service Committee at a group activity to provide pro bono services to senior citizens served by the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program (SLP). For more information and to volunteer, complete the form below.
