The Basics of Family Law Jurisdiction

Sponsors: Bank of Nevada and Las Vegas Legal Video

A concept that is given too little attention in school and in practice, jurisdiction is the key determinant of whether a specific court can act at all and, if so, determines what the Court can actually decide.

Family Law has unique and different jurisdictional requirements from most other areas of law, which should be examined in almost every case.  Just because a Court can hear a divorce action does not mean that it can determine custody, support, or even some property issues. This program will cover these key concepts:

  • The Concept of Divisible Divorce
  • Divorce Jurisdiction, subject matter and personal
  • Child Custody – Initial and Modification Jurisdiction
  • Child Support – Initial and Modification Jurisdiction
  • Military Retirement Federal Jurisdiction
  • Family Court Jurisdiction
