Outgoing Chief Judge Jerry Wiese to Hand Over Torch to Incoming Chief Judge Tierra Jones
On July 1, 2026, outgoing Eighth Judicial District Court Chief Judge Jerry Wiese will officially pass on the leadership of the court to incoming Chief Judge Tierra Jones. The local rules of practice for the Eighth Judicial District Court require all district judges to biennially select among their peers a chief judge, who may serve no more than two consecutive two-year terms.
Judge Wiese, who first assumed his duties as chief on July 1, 2022, served a total of four years over two terms. Reflecting on the Court’s accomplishments under his leadership, Judge Wiese stated, “It has been a tremendous honor to have served as Chief Judge over the last four years, and I am excited to watch Judge Jones shape our Court to meet and tackle all the challenges that are yet to come.”
Judge Tierra Jones, who was unanimously selected by her peers to serve as the next chief, and whose leadership experience includes several years of service as the presiding criminal division judge, will be taking the helm. Judge Jones stated, “I am honored that my peers have placed their confidence in me to lead this Court. I thank Judge Wiese for his service as chief, and I am looking forward to working with my management team as the Court continues to identify ways to improve access to justice and service to the public.”
The local rules of practice also require the chief judge to appoint presiding judges to assist with administrative duties. Judge Jones has reappointed Judge Tara Clark Newberry, who has been overseeing the civil division over previous administrations, to continue serving as civil presiding judge. Judge Carli Kierny, who currently serves on the Court’s Homicide Team, has been selected to serve as the criminal presiding judge. Judge Cynthia Giuliani, who has been deeply committed to serving families and children as a jurist since 2009, will be the presiding judge over the family division.
