Former Speaker of the Nevada Assembly Barbara Buckley will make a special presentation during the Clark County Bar Luncheon at Vic’s Las Vegas in downtown Las Vegas on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. Members of the Nevada legal community are invited to attend to learn what this thoughtful speaker has to say about the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and her reflections on 35 years of service and vision for the future.
Barbara Buckley is the Executive Director of Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada, a nonprofit corporation dedicated to righting wrongs and changing lives for those who cannot afford an attorney. Most of Legal Aid Center’s efforts focus on representing children in the foster care system, the elderly in guardianship court, and those who are being defrauded or taken advantage of. Barbara spent her entire legal career with Legal Aid Center, beginning as a staff attorney in 1989. Since that time, Barbara has created many innovative and award-winning programs including two Self-Help Centers, which serve over 150,000 people a year. Legal Aid Center also runs the Resiliency & Justice Center, created in the aftermath of the nation’s worst incident of mass violence. The Resiliency Center serves every survivor of violent crime in the community. Barbara is now leading an effort to construct an Advocacy & Justice Complex to house Legal Aid Center’s programs serving survivors of crime and an operations center to assist Clark County in helping victims when a tragedy strikes.
While working for Legal Aid Center, Barbara ran and was elected to the Nevada Assembly from 1995 to 2010, working both “jobs” for sixteen years. Along the way, she was unanimously elected as the State’s first woman Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly from 2007 through 2010, after serving as the first female Majority Leader of the Nevada Assembly from 2001 to 2007. She has received many awards and honors, including the Most Effective Legislator in the Assembly for six consecutive sessions and was described as the “The Best Reason Not to Lose Faith in the Legislature.”
