Decades of Dedication: Judge Joseph S. Sciscento’s Esteemed Legal Journey in Las Vegas
Judge Joseph S. Sciscento has served on the Las Vegas Justice Court bench since 2009, handling a wide range of cases, including criminal, civil, evictions, traffic, misdemeanor trials, and felony preliminary hearings. He was appointed in 2009 and re-elected in 2010, 2012, and 2018. Judge Sciscento also presided over the Moderate Offenders Program for DUI and handled Animal Control cases for seven years.
Judge Sciscento graduated Cum Laude from California State University Northridge in 1988 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of San Diego in 1991 and studied under U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy in London. He received awards in Moot Court competitions during his law school years.
After moving to Las Vegas in 1991, Judge Sciscento practiced probate, guardianship, and estate planning law, as well as criminal and civil law. He later opened his own practice, focusing on criminal defense. He served as President of the Nevada Society of Italian American Lawyers in 1997 and 2006 and was active in Nevada Attorneys for Criminal Justice. In 2005, he received the Co-Justinian Award.
Judge Sciscento is dedicated to community service, having mentored in the Big Brother program and volunteered at Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada. He has also guest lectured at UNLV Law School and presided over Mock Trial competitions.
Judge Sciscento was married in Granada, Spain, and has two sons, Mateo (20) and Guillermo (11). Although divorced, he continues to co-parent in Las Vegas. He currently presides over Department 2 and has consistently received high retention ratings from attorneys in the Review Journal’s “Judging the Judges” survey.
